Reflections on a Desert(ed) Island [Aug. 21st, 2008|08:38 am]

masqlab
I have been listening to the radio station "The Mountain" a lot lately, stuck in a tiny tissue culture room (soundproof, luckily, as I sing along frequently), and today I caught one of the "Desert Island Discs" dealies.  You pick three CDs/albums you'd want with you on a desert island. [Axeman and I both think this should be called 'Deserted Island Disc', but that's a topic for another post, eh?]

Mine would be Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Towards Ectasy, then a toss up between Melissa Etheridge's Yes I Am, Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill and U2's Unforgettable Fire.

What are yours?

With a Little Help From My Friends... [Aug. 21st, 2008|03:00 pm]
littleropefeed
After another hiatus, hey, I'm back again! Sorry, friends, it's been a crazy time.

The big (non-kinky) news around here is that I recently bought a car. My faithful old college beater finally gave up the ghost a few weeks ago. I flirted briefly with the idea of becoming a full-time bus chick, but that really doesn't suit my life as it is right now. So as of last week I'm the proud owner of a Ford Taurus - more reliable than sexy, but a nice smooth ride, and it gets me where I want to go. Thanks to some helpful and generous friends for the assistance that made this possible! Next project: apartment hunting.

And of course, now that I'm recommitted to writing here, I'll be out of town with no internet for a few days. But I've just discovered the miraculous "post date" feature, so I'm lining up a few low-substance posts. Stayed tuned for fun photos...

Hello, Seattle, glad to be back! Wow, it's raining - who'd have thought?

A few notes: if you emailed me about seeing me in the near future, I will get back to you as soon as humanly possible, I swear. I'm just a bit behind... (Which is as frequent a circumstance as the rain, I know.)

A couple of (very tame and vanilla) snapshots from Vegas up on the Flickr feed. I meant to take more and I just got distracted.

Speaking of Vegas, I tried on this jacket there and I am sure I need to have this soon. I want another leather jacket as well, but this one is too cute!

A congratulations to my pal Lochai on his new job at Hogtied.com...

Others may be outraged, but I think this kinky Burger King tray-liner ad is hilarious. (Work-safe link)

And a note about Seattle co-op boards, for those of you intrigued by the recent letter about them.

For your reader who was curious about co-op boards on Capitol Hill, I recently spent several years living in a co-op and my then-partner was on the board and can offer some insights.
Your correspondent was probably frightened by scenes from TV shows depicting New York co-op boards grilling prospective shareholders. In Seattle, it's not the case. In my co-op, the board "interview" was really them going through the rules with you and asking you if you had any questions. They never asked details about people's financial lives. It was a thoroughly rubber-stamped process. I suppose if you showed up smelling like garbage and carrying some cats around, they might ask questions, but as long as you're presentable, you won't have issues.

With the housing market as it is, a co-op board is probably happy to have new tenants moving in.

It's important to remember that co-ops are corporations where you buy shares in that corporation; shareholders are then granted a lease on one of the apartments. It's not quite like a condo. It's actually much friendlier, and far less expensive.

So there you go, co-op buyers.

Good day. [Aug. 20th, 2008|09:40 pm]

I broke $3,000 for the 3 Day Walk.

My desk is cleared off.  There will be more tomorrow, but still...

Got to play with 3 Border Collies at work today.  9 year, 2 year, and an 8 month old.  A winner of a combination.

I tried to fight the need for caffeine and lost, but the nice person in the car behind me picked up my tab.

And tonight I finished the first disc of season two of Dexter.

Really good day.

More Miscellanea [Aug. 20th, 2008|07:45 pm]

Riding the bus from 1st and Bell, along Elliot Ave, to Ballard, during Hempfest, is unlike riding the bus on a normal work day.  Trippy might be a good word to describe my commute home on Sunday.   I had just seen an article in the paper about a record number of bicycles being left on Metro buses during last year's Hempfest.  I can see why. Heh.

I saw a bumper sticker I liked while I was out for a run yesterday.  "Jesus would use his turn signal"  Made me chuckle and smile for blocks.

And, OK people.  The primary is over -- stop frakking calling our house between 6 and 9pm and suggesting who might be the best candidate for X position.  I won't vote for you if you call me more than once.  Just sayin.

BAYLISS: If this was your case you’d be thorough.

PEMBLETON: [waffling] Ehh.

BAYLISS: No, you would.

A man has been found shot dead in the stairwell of his apartment building — the same stairwell where he shot three detectives just days earlier. The charges against him won’t stick, though, so no one on the police force is much interested in solving his murder. Detective Tim Bayliss caught the case, forcing him to investigate his fellow cops if he wants to close it. But he doesn’t want the case, doesn’t want to know if any of his fellow police killed the shooter, doesn’t want to close the case and doesn’t want it open.

His partner, Frank Pembleton, is staying away from the case, but Bayliss goes to him and wonders out loud about the rightness of criminals who don’t get caught and killers who walk. Every cop has seen someone he knows to be guilty go free.

PEMBLETON: It doesn’t seem fair does it?

BAYLISS: No, it doesn’t. But who am I to say? I mean, I’m not God. I mean, we could go about seeking revenge and if we’re smart we’re not ever going to get caught. But that makes us like terrorists. Making up our own rules. What’s the difference?

PEMBLETON: What’s the difference?

BAYLISS: Yeah.

PEMBLETON: We’re the good guys.

1.  Rain:  Good and Bad.  Garden really needs the moisture.  I don' t like getting drenched with sideways rain on my way to the bus, especially after being woken at 4:45 by Uma barking.

2.  Corn on the cob:  Good.  Been eating it since Sunday's acquisition at the Farmer's Market.  Nom nom nom.

3.  Diana Gabaldon books:  Awesome.  Except I left my book at home yesterday, midway through a crucial scene and had nothing to read on the bus.  :(

4.  Work:  Enh.  Good and Bad.  Crazy busy.  Cause for upcoming reflective post on what the hell am I doing with my life.

5.  Katahdin Blueberry and Walnut chocolate bar from Seeds of Change:  Good, but could be much better with an up in the cacao content.  I misread the label as dark chocolate, but it is 'dark milk chocolate'.  Only 40%. Bah.  But it does have a nifty drawing of blueberries, moose and the Mountain itself.

A friend and co-worker from my former job just found out she's going to need to supplement her income, so she's on the lookout for freelance graphic design opportunities. She called me to see if I know anything about it, which I don't, really--I only know about freelance copyediting and proofing, and that only with the few companies I've worked with.

I know this is an editorial community, but I thought it might be worth asking in case someone here has pointers. Are there any good resources out there for someone looking to get into freelance graphic design?

Thanks!

My computer thinks we're in England instead of the U.S.! [Aug. 20th, 2008|11:26 am]

[mood | curious]

I'm editing a poli-sci manuscript for someone and my Microsoft Word template got messed up and kept changing all the pages to A4 size. I would fix it and exit the file and open it again, and suddenly it was A4 again! grrr! So I got that part fixed by closing MS Word and doing what our ITS guy told me, which was to delete all the normal.dot files on my hard drive. Then I restarted Word and my pages are back to Letter size, which is good, because that's what I want.

However, my spellcheck somehow has loaded the British English dictionary, instead of the American English dictionary. The spellcheck wants me to use spellings like fervour, endeavour, centre, etc.

How do I fix my spellcheck dictionary back to American spellings?

Thank you so much, in advance!

p.s. I'm pretty sure that the author of the document had the pages set for A4. He's from Africa and he probably started writing the book when he was there.

Nominated?!

So I twittered about this last night, seems that I was nominated to be part of the "Hot Male Blogger" calendar. Not sure what all this entails, just yet. I'm I supposed to ask you to keep nominating me or wait till the actual voting starts? To be frank, this week is one of those "if I have to juggle one more thing, I'm gonna scream" sorta weeks so I'm going to ask if anyone out there who knows the deal would be nice and give me the reader's digest as to what is expected of me, that would rock.

On the plus side, it is not everyday you get the opportunity to be in a calendar. That is pretty damned cool.

Edited to add: Upon sharing this info with the Minion one asked, "so will you be posing nude with just a lawn gnome covering your crotch?" Now this idea has some merit.

Which of you wrote in to Miss Manners? [Aug. 20th, 2008|09:47 am]

Dear Miss Manners:

Last night, when I was shopping in a nationally known, chain-type drugstore in my neighborhood, I noticed three different signs that contained misspellings.
...
I work as a proofreader and editor, and it disappoints me to see so many mistakes regarding the English language. Would it be rude to call the store and mention the mistakes to the manager, in a polite way, of course? Part of me believes that I would be remiss if I did not bring the matter to someone's attention.

More Notes From Las Vegas

The Cher show? Was great. In addition to the (more or less) live songs, she included a lot of video clips from the old Sonny & Cher variety show, and it was a delightful reminder of the fact that Cher's been doing this gig since I was just a tot. Which I still am, compared to Cher. And damn, I hope I look as good as she does when I'm in my sixties. (I don't care that she's had surgery. If you look good, it doesn't matter to me how you brought that about, I'm on board with it.)

Afterward Elvis and I went dancing at this club in Caesar's, called Cleopatra's Barge, and one of the songs they played was - oh my god - Abba. Seriously. Dancing Queen, to be specific. The DJ had this seventies-riffic theme he was on, and he was into it.

So we were laughing and dancing to Abba, and suddenly I had a almost painfully vivid memory of my sophomore year of high school. You see, I was in the jazz chorus, and we sang Dancing Queen. Really. I'm not kidding. Six little Catholic high school girls, warbling "You're a tease and you turn him on - leave him burning, and then you're goooooooooone". Sounds more like someone being given a case of the clap than a romance, but hey, maybe it's a Swedish thing.

As I danced, I remembered - with a slight inward wince - performing that song. Badly, I'm sure. In those tacky little outfits that we wore. That our mothers had to make for us. Lordy.

Then the visceral intensity of the memory passed, and I was back in Vegas, in the now. Wearing my favorite white Herve Leger dress, stiletto heels, and all my bling, drinking champagne, and getting into mischief. Quite a difference, to put it mildly. If you had said to that fifteen-year-old girl, "Hey, when you're a grown-up, here's what your life will look like..." Well, I have no idea how that girl would have reacted. With disbelief, probably.

It's so strange how we get from one place to another in our lives. But I love my life. Yeah, I really do.
